Our WASH program addresses the most critical determinant of life in arid lands: water. We go beyond infrastructure to create sustainable, community-managed water systems that promote health, free up time for productive work (especially for women and girls), and become a foundation for peace.
By integrating water access with sanitation and hygiene education, we create a holistic approach to community well-being and dignity.
Our Integrated Approach:
We implement durable solutions with full community ownership:
-
Sustainable Water Infrastructure: Constructing and rehabilitating context-appropriate water points, including sand dams, boreholes, shallow wells, and rainwater harvesting systems, based on hydrological surveys and community choice.
-
Community-Led Management: Establishing and training Water User Committees to operate, maintain, and govern the water points, setting fair tariffs, and managing funds for repairs.
-
Behavioral Change Integration: Coupling all water projects with targeted hygiene and sanitation promotion (e.g., building latrines, teaching handwashing) to maximize health outcomes and reduce waterborne diseases.
Impact & Alignment:
Reliable water is a multiplier for PDA’s impact. It enables Food & Nutrition Security through kitchen gardens, supports Agro-Value Chain activities like dairy and crop production, and is a prerequisite for Primary Health Support. Most critically, it directly addresses a key driver of conflict, reinforcing our Peace and Security work by transforming water from a source of tension into a shared asset.
