Our Carbon Credits Program empowers pastoralist communities to generate sustainable income while combating climate change. By verifying and monetizing their traditional, climate-smart land management practices, we create a direct financial link between global climate action and local prosperity in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). This initiative turns environmental stewardship into a viable livelihood, fostering a powerful cycle of ecological health and community resilience.
Our Integrated Approach:
We work hand-in-hand with communities to develop projects that are both ecologically sound and culturally appropriate:
- Community-Led Project Design: We partner with communities to document indigenous knowledge and co-design land management plans, such as regenerative grazing, grassland restoration, and agroforestry, that meet international carbon sequestration standards.
- Technical Verification & Market Access: PDA acts as a bridge, connecting communities with scientific partners for carbon measurement and auditing, and navigating the complex carbon market to ensure fair and transparent sales of verified credits.
- Transparent Benefit-Sharing: We support the establishment of community-governed funds, ensuring that revenue from carbon credits is reinvested according to local priorities, such as water infrastructure, education scholarships, or women-led enterprises.
Impact & Alignment:
This program directly advances PDA’s core focus areas of Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Livelihoods. It provides a tangible economic incentive for large-scale landscape restoration, enhances biodiversity, and creates a self-sustaining funding stream for community-chosen development projects, securing a more resilient future.
